Open Studios continues its registration process with states throughout
the country. As a nonprofit organization, we seek donations and
contributions from the public. Many states therefore, require that we
register with them. Some five states permit registration without fees,
or don't require registration at all at this point. The rest,
apparently, require fees of $10, $15, up to $80 USD or more. We view
this process as an important and necessary, if not onerous, burden. Can
you help? The full story is at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/studioforrecording/statereg.html . We call it
our SPONSOR A STATE PROJECT.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS:
Each month, we'll highlight a few of the previous month's news articles
(hopefully with active links). Subscribers and supporters are encouragd
to email us with links you found to be interesting. We'll add them
here. It's a good way for collecting an archive you can refer to when
you need it as part of your Internet business strategies.

'Brainwave' cap controls computer Cursor movement recordings
"A team of US researchers has shown that controlling devices with the
brain is a step closer."

[Ed. Note: If you believe in a world where the severely disabled are
empowered to be a contributing member of a civil discussion in society,
this article is well worth the read.]

>From Wi-Fi Planet, December 7, 2004
By Naomi Graychase

"The Chicago Public Library's hotspot network is good news for all
patrons, both with and without wireless-enabled devices. Wi-Fi users can
now employ their own laptops to tap into the card catalog and all of the
library's research databases without having to wait in line for an
available computer terminal, which in turn frees up more space for
patrons without their own wireless devices."

Starbucks Gives a Caffeine Jolt to Sales of CD
Wed Dec 8, 7:55 AM ET
By Geoff Boucher Times Staff Writer

"The way people discover and buy their music is evolving," Lombard
said, "and a big part of our model is to make it comfortable for
discovery."

The idea of Starbucks — to many a symbol of corporate ubiquity — as
music boutique makes some independent retailers roll their eyes, but one
of them, Rand Foster, owner of Fingerprints in Long Beach, said the Hear
Music selections were well done, and he liked "seeing people buy good
music."

"Although," he added, "as a music store owner, clearly I don't like
seeing more competition."

Tenet calls for Internet security
By Shaun Waterman
UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL

"The way the Internet was built might be part of the problem, he said.
Its open architecture allows Web surfing, but that openness makes the
system vulnerable, Mr. Tenet said.

Access to networks like the World Wide Web might need to be limited to
those who can show they take security seriously, he said."

[Ed. Note: The call to eliminate the Internet, and replace it with a
corporate distribution channel . . . . Will it happen in 2005?]

THE COMMUNITY SCENE:
Open Studios works with communities around the country and around the
world to build and operate community-based recording studios. You can
keep up with the latest happenings by checking this section each month.
Learn what others are doing, and get ideas for your community.

2004 was a disappointing year for Open Studios in one sense. We have
close to two dozen communities around the world that are loggered down
on the step of obtaining a computer. Most are located in developing
countries, and need a solution to this specific step in building and
operating a community-based recording studio. We look forward to 2005
as the year we all can look back on, and agree that Open Studios
unlocked the secret to this dilemma. Please help us with your thoughts
and ideas.

HOW THEY DO IT:
This on-going series explores potential business strategies and ideas
for musicians, artists, and authors interested in pursuing careers
outside mainstream industry practices:

Scum Posts, or Spam, as some call it, is a real problem for musicians,
artists, and authors wishing to engage a marketing campaign to spread
the word about their works around the world. Nonprofits, as well,
wonder how they can differentiate their message from unwanted mail
solicitations. Here is a sample footer that was seen on one mass
mailing post. It's certainly food for thought.

"Under Bill s.1-6-1-8 Title I-I-I passed by the 105th U.S. Congress this
mail cannot be considered Spam as long as we include contact information
and a remove link for removal from our mailing list. Pursuant to Federal
law, if you do not wish to receive future email messages from us, please
reply with "Remove" in the Subject line and your e-mail address will be
promptly removed. To ensure a quick response, please include all
pertinent email addresses."

leaving my skid marks all over the hemisphere...

Also, if you go to my website at
http://www.davesoroka.com/newsletter/MailBot/redirect.cfm?MessageID=182&ListID=43&Link=www.davesoroka.com
and scroll down on the home page you'll see a photograph of the moon rising
over Arizona taken last July from a moving car on Route 40, old Route 66, and
if you click on that photo you will hear a song called Lucinda, from the
home-recorded CD Hurricane Of Tenderness -**!!!**NEWS FLASH**!!!**- which CD
may turn out to be just a prototype of an album Dusty Stable Music and I are
considering recording this winter. When a final decision is made, you'll read
it here first...

My webmaster, Django, is taking a much-deserved four-month vacation in
Colorado, but he is taking his laptop with him and will be maintaining
my site on a wireless internet connection from a ski resort in paradise,
lucky sh*t. I just want to wish him a great time on the slopes and thank
him for all the good work he's done throughout 2004. It's been a great
year, largely due to Django. Django, buddy, when I'm stepping out on
stage someone often gives me the old line, "Break a leg", well man,
DON'T break a leg in Colorado. And make sure you've got travel
insurance, just in case.

*****
My daughter October and her husband and son are arriving today from LA,
so it feels like at last the Christmas season will begin for real around
here. Some of you who are in the email group called Daddyo know that
October is our illustrious head waitress, bartender, bouncer and Judge
In All Contests. It's a fun group, and despite its sometimes
two-month-long silences, when the cafe comes to life it can be a real
blast. If you haven't joined Daddyo, you really oughtta do so. Go to:

http://www.davesoroka.com/newsletter/MailBot/redirect.cfm?MessageID=182&ListID=43&Link=launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/daddyo/

and follow the directions.

*****
I hope you-all have the very finest of Christmases, and I wish you all
the best for 2005.

COMMONS GALLERY BEST OF THE BEST:
The Creative Commons Project offers musicians, artists, and authors a
nifty way to meet their legal needs for licensing their works for
distribution across the Internet. If readers discover interesting
material that sports the Creative Commons tag, let us know, and we'll

Remember when cars sported running boards out of practical necessity?
Most roads back then weren't paved like our roads, today.

The Digital Age, still in its' infancy, requires the use of electronic
running boards. People are out there that have never used a computer.
Most people don't understand how computers work [I just raised my hand],
let alone how to make CD's, DVD's, MP3's, OGG, WAV, and the list goes
on.

And, in the arts and sciences, from musicians to artists to authors, the
knowledge that recordings no longer requires an expensive recording
studio is restricted to just a few. This newsletter intends to help
musicians, artists, and authors to step out and enter the Digital Age.
We'll provide the running board to help you avoid the "mud". If you're
involved in the arts, we hope you'll join us each month.
