Hi, Andrew: If I understand what you're saying, I think the Open
Studios approach might be worth checking out.

Here's a starting script:
Think of a good name for a community-based recording studio, something
like Capetown Community Recording Studio.

Since you already have equipment, and Pro Tools, make a recording and
then put it on a web page. Also make a CD that can be copied and shared
with anyone, like a business card, to show what the quality of a
community-based recording studio sounds like. This will help stir up
interest.

You want to eventually register the community-based recording studio as
a nonprofit organization, and apply for tax-exempt status.

The equipment for the nonprofit will be donated by people responding to
your solicitations for equipment. So, you need to attract volunteers to
help build your organization up, and help with funding, etc.

In the meantime, you already are set up for a for-profit studio. So,
set up a consulting business, or whatever, and start marketing, using
the Internet. Time to compete in the global marketplace, eh?

Open Studios doesn't get into the for-profit side of things, but,
interestingly, the steps for nonprofit business are identical in many
ways. If you want us to work with you on this, send the following, like
we did with Karel, and we'll get started:
1] Pick out a name
2] Send the studio name, and the names and addresses of the key core
persons for your community-based recording studio
3] I will send by postal mail, a Memorandum of Understanding that you
can edit, sign, and return. This document will also be of big help for
attracting interest to your project.
4] When I receive that, we start in to get you off and running.

Remember, all our services are free.

I suspect that you need to keep the two projects independent of each
other. For example, it will be exciting to develop the equipment with
the nonprofit with the idea in mind that volunteers will be operating
it. You will be a Board member, and not the "store-owner". The ability
to attract paying customers will be there, without the conflict of
interest.

The equipment needed for a community-based recording studio is somewhat
different than what you are using for your for-profit business. We
recommend a PC, along with Open Source or free software and using the
following sites for guidance as to software:
http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/
Center For Computer Research In Music and Acoustics

http://www.agnula.org/
Consortium of research institutions in Europe

There's also the work being done at:

Also, this might be a good time to reach out and see what interest any
of the local Linux Users Groups in the Capetown area might have in
working with you on the nonprofit hardware/software needs.
Thanks,
Tom Poe
