Title: What About Health Care?

The COMMON SENSE Foundation

Consider This…

WHAT ABOUT HEALTH CARE?

As the pre-session posturing by state leaders moves into high gear this month, were hearing a lot about the budget. In particular, were not hearing much courage with regard to the new revenue that is so desperately needed.

Were also not hearing much in the way of new policy ideas. One of the most glaring omissions is health coverage.

Last year the Common Sense Foundation published a report (available here) on the 1.4 million North Carolinians who cannot afford health insurance. Its likely that the General Assembly will once again consider a bill that establishes the right to health care, considered a principled first step toward universal health coverage.

Access to adequate health care is a fundamental right. State leaders should begin talking about how to make this a concrete goal this session.
