BLUE CROSS GIVEAWAY BY THE NUMBERS

This week Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina announced that it will eliminate copayments for its members on generic drug prescriptions in the fourth quarter of this year. Here are some numbers to put that somewhat small giveaway into context:

165 :   In millions of dollars, amount of profit earned in 2003 by not-for-profit BCBSNC

104 :    In millions of dollars, amount of profit earned in the first half of 2004 by BCBSNC

10  :     In millions of dollars, expected cost of free drug benefit in fourth-quarter 2004

10  :     In millions of dollars, amount BCBSNC gave to N.C. free clinics in 2004

2    :     In millions of dollars, annual pay for BCBSNC CEO Bob Greczyn

4    :     Rank of BCBSNC in 2003 profitability among the 56 Blue Cross plans nationwide
