More recent information about planned programs related to the Karen Youth project and the publication CHPAC helped commission After a long birthing process the Karen Youth bilingual book is being published and should be delivered later this week! On June 2, from 6-7:00, the book
will be introduced to the public with a presentation by the kids and mentors about the journey from conception to completion. The publication party will be at FRANK. On the afternoon of June 5, a book launch and celebration of Karen culture will be held at Kidzu in University Place. This is a collaboration of the Karen Youth Group, Transplanting
Traditions, Orange Literacy Council, The Carolina Asia Center and UNC's Program in the Humanities. Karen Youth will read from
the book in both languages as well as sing and play Karen music; photography mentor Dennis Szerszen will present a slideshow of images from the book; Kidzu's Makery will be the scene for children to create collages relating to traditional Karen designs with
FRANK's Sandy Milroy. Karen costumes will also be displayed for added inspiration. Several tables will enrich the experience: Karen Youth will provide tastings, recipes and demonstrations of produce from the Transplanting Traditions farm. The Carolina
Asia Center table will display maps and photos of Karen ceremonies, villages and culture. FRANK's table will offer books for sale and Chapel Hill Public Library & Family Literacy Table and The Orange
Literacy Council will also have tables.
