Dear CHPAC members,

The Veterans Memorial Committee, a citizen group overseeing the design and implementation of a veterans memorial for Chapel Hill Cemetery, is seeking a member of CHPAC to replace a retiring arts person who has served on this committee for 3 years and was a former member of CHPAC.  Before going into the history of the project, I want to let you know what the commitment would be.  The Group meets 3 to 4 times a year, usually late afternoon to conduct business.  The group was formed and has been charged by Town Council to oversee a privately funded veterans memorial to be located at center of CH cemetery on a currently blank, and not so attractive small brick plaza.

In June 2010 an RFQ to 43 architect and landscape architect firms was distributed

After a selection process, a team of an architect, artist, and landscape architect led by David Swanson & Assoc. received the commission

In 2011 this team worked with the committee to identify a vision and values for the memorial

A design featuring a grove of trees, benches with inscriptions, pylons with inscribed insignias of the 5 branches of the military, seating stones, a flagpole and  as yet undetermined art component at the flag pole base was accepted by the committee in late 2012 and by Council in April of 2013 (see link below for a visual presentation)

The committee as a whole are still wrestling with a number of issues (finding and approving quotations for the benches, the artful design of the flag pole base or other sculptural elements, as well as how to develop a fund raising plan and market the design to the community).

A former CHPAC member has served on the committee since late 2010, but due to other professional commitments now is no longer able to serve as the art liaison to the committee (the majority of the committee are vets, who are passionate, but more concerned with the meaning than how that meaning is conveyed through the art .  If any CHPAC member would like to serve on this committee, I and the committee would welcome your involvement.  Please let me know if you would like to serve.
