are a lot of interesting features at the The
amount of money spent on that public art, the location of that public art and
the need for that public art has been a controversial issue for some time.
Because of the Town of Chapel
Hill is by no means the only community with a percent-for-art ordinance; the
movement has been growing, and the concept exists everywhere from The
question concerning the Town Ops Center, though, is not whether the concept is
right but whether this was the right place to spend so much money. Inherent
in the concept is that public art should be ... well, public. The It's
a legitimate question and a justifiable concern. Perhaps, somewhere along the
line, more attention should have been paid to whether we needed to spend all of
that 1 percent at this particular site. But it's important as well not to throw
out the baby with the bathwater, and deny the real benefits of public art. URL
