CREATIVE COMMONS ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF "THE FINE ART OF SAMPLING" CONTESTS

Music Fans Sampled The Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Dangermouse, Le Tigre, My Morning Jacket, the Fine Arts Militia featuring Chuck D, and Others to Win Spot on New CDs!

SAN FRANCISCO, USA -- March 8th, 2004 -- The most prominent experiment in free culture reached yet another milestone today with the announcement of the winners of the Fine Art of Sampling Contests. The contests, run by Creative Commons, the innovative nonprofit dedicated to expanding the range of creative and intellectual works that are free to build upon and share, were based upon the original WIRED CD -- Rip. Sample. Mash. Share., released in the November 2004 issue of WIRED Magazine.

The WIRED CD was the first major compilation of music free to sample and share under Creative Commons' "some rights reserved" copyright. The groundbreaking album features tracks from the Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Zap Mama, My Morning Jacket, Spoon, Gilberto Gil, Dan the Automator, Thievery Corporation, Le Tigre, Paul Westerberg, Fine Arts Militia featuring Chuck D, The Rapture, Cornelius, Danger Mouse & Jemini, DJ Dolores, and Matmos. Audio streams of the tracks, along with WIRED's cover story on Creative Commons, can be found at <http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.11/sample.html>.

Entrants in the Fine Art of Sampling Contests were challenged with sampling or mashing up the WIRED tracks to produce new works judged on their originality, incorporation of the sampled songs, and technical merit. The contests included two categories of competition, the winners of which appear below. All the tracks are free for download (and sampling, mashing, and file-sharing) at <http://ccmixter.org>.
