CREATIVE COMMONS EXPANDS TO BRAZIL WITH FGV LAW SCHOOL AND MINISTER OF
CULTURE GILBERTO GIL

Fundação Getulio Vargas Law School of Rio de Janeiro will lead the
license translation and work to expand global access to Brazilian culture

Palo Alto, USA, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - August 5, 2003 - Creative
Commons, a nonprofit dedicated to building a body of creative works free
for copying and re-use, announced today that it would expand its
International Commons (iCommons) project to Brazil. The Fundação Getulio
Vargas (FGV) Law School, in Rio de Janeiro, will lead the effort.

FGV and Creative Commons also announced their plans to begin work with
the Brazilian Minister of Culture, world-renowned musician Gilberto Gil,
to use the licenses to expand access to Brazilian culture, including the
country's rich musical tradition.

"We're very excited to have FGV lead iCommons Brazil," said Lawrence
Lessig, Chairman of Creative Commons and professor of law at Stanford.
"The project will demonstrate the value of a living, growing cultural
commons."

"Bringing the Creative Commons to Brazil is an important step to enhance
global access to our rich cultural heritage," said Ronaldo Lemos, project
lead and professor of law at FGV.

Announced in March 2003, iCommons is Creative Commons' project to make
its machine-readable copyright licenses useful worldwide. As lead
institution, FGV Law School will coordinate a public effort to literally
and legally translate the Creative Commons licenses for use in Brazil.
FGV will field comments on an archived email discussion at the Creative
Commons website, <http://creativecommons.org/projects/international/>.

Brazil joins Japan and Finland in the iCommons effort.
