I just realized that the CC BY-NC is the license for http:// www.boingboing.net
There are several ads on the site, and from what has been discussed a number of times here, I think this is a misuse of the license.
Boing Boing are the authors of the content. They do offer the content under a BY-NC license to users of the site, but they are not themselves using the content under an NC license. So they are allowed to show adverts alongside their content.
If anyone else used the content under the NC license and showed adverts that would be bad.
But much of Boing Boing is quotation from other sites, and you can go to the sources of this material to use it under the terms of its license or within the limits of Fair Use.
