Dear Shrenik,
I'm sorry to jump in so late, but just wanted to note that clause 2(a) of the PDF you've attached notes that this is a CC BY-NC-SA (attribution+noncommercial+share alike) licence + exclusive commercial rights to InOpen Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
I hope you heard back the same from the Profs too.
Cheers,
Pranesh

I now understand the implications of Plus and as the license agreement states certain additional terms for commercial use it is best to have it clarified from the licensor themselves.
The signatories in this case are Prof Sridhar Iyer and Prof Shishir Kumar Jha of IITB. Am directly reaching out to them.
Herein is attached a copy of the CC+ agreement for sake of completeness of this discussion.
Thanks,
Shrenik

Hi,

Thanks for your responses.
What I missed to mention in my query earlier was that they have specified
the license type inside the books. It is a /*CC Plus (Creative License) ,
Attribution-Non Commercial-Share Alike*/. For example, it is mentioned on
page 2 of book 8 and towards the end of the book in the other books.
I have read through the terms but yet have this query and will be grateful
if you can now answer this with the above clarity -
Am I free to adapt this book in multiple Indian languages and in animated
format and distribute it at cost i.e. sans any profits as long as I keep
the attribution to the original authors intact?
Thanks,
Shrenik

Hi there
This is Yohann Thomas from Wikimedia India.
I have seen many discussions on similar topics on other mailing lists.
& Here I agree with Savithri....
When you translate a book, it comes under the term - "adaptation".
Since there is no such mention of it in the license, The books can't be
translated.
I think before any organization releases books/images or any multimedia
under CC license, they should try to reach out to stakeholders of CC
India so that they can be guided on which type of license to release
under so that their objectives are met..
Thanks

Savithri Singh is right.
"download and use the books below, for non-commercial purposes" --
makes it CC NC (creative commons non commercial)
For example, if I were to take these books at the following link
- http://www.it.iitb.ac.in/~sri/ssrvm/
<http://www.it.iitb.ac.in/%7Esri/ssrvm/>, released under the
Creative Commons license, modify and/or translate them to all
other Indian languages and distribute it for free then would it
in anyway violate any copyright
-- You can not do it. The current license does not clarify it. Other
than "derivative works" there is no information "share alike".
I would suggest the same thing what Savithri Singh has suggested:
please contact them about their license. The best free license is of
course CC 4.0 SA (or my favorite CC 0).

Dear Shrenik,
My understanding of what it says on the website.
If you look carefully while they have said that the books are
released under CC license they have not specified the license
(for different licenses pl
seehttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/
<https://creativecommons.org/licenses/> ).
The site also writes that "You are free to download and use the
books below, for non-commercial purposes." This implies that you
are free to download, print and distribute. While I believe they
would not be averse to translation and distribution, since it
does not mention anywhere about
adaptation/modification/translation, it is best to enquire.
Hope this helps. I have copied the mail to others, who may like
to reply/comment.
