Dear all,
this is to let you know that I have been working for some time now
with some folks from CC and with some local volunteers in Singapore to
create a platform for the tracking and reporting of CC's global
growth. As you well know, I, and others, have been collecting and
analyzing data on the adoption of CC licenses for a while now, but we
have also come to recognize that automatically collected data can only
tell a small part of the story that is the growth and use of CC
licenses around the world. So we are working towards producing a wiki-
based platform which will contain overview articles plus a page per
jurisdiction with data and commentary on the growth of CC in different
parts of the world. It is envisioned as a peer-produced platform, so
after we launch it we will invite you to add local and other knowledge
that you may have on the growth of CC, the factors driving it, the
impact it is having, etc.
Imagine this as a structured, global and continuously updated report
on the adoption of all things open, only for now we focus on
collecting in one place all knowledge pertaining to the growth of CC.
The platform will then be valuable for reporting purposes (e.g., to CC
supporters, funding bodies and the media), for advocacy and, last but
not least, for academic research. For all these reasons we will be
aiming at a high level of quality and set high standards for
attribution, citation, verification of sources, etc. This is clearly a
long-term project, currently run with the help of CC HQ, a small team
of volunteers, and a small grant from SSRC: http://mediaresearchhub.ssrc.org/grants/funded-projects/assessing-the-commons-social-metrics-for-the-new-media-landscape/
For those of you familiar with these projects, imagine this as a
combination of the OpenNet Initiative (http://opennet.net/) and Global
Voices (http://globalvoicesonline.org/), where the former is similar
in terms of structure and aims, but the latter is also very valuable
as an example of how local knowledge can be aggregated to produce
local and global perspectives.
For now we are still working on the setup of the platform and are
planning to populate the wiki with some initial stats and articles, to
help get the ball rolling. As such, some of the people I work with
will contact some of you to ask for your inputs on the situation in
your jurisdiction and I would much appreciate it if you help them by
answering their questions and also adding any additional perspectives
that you may have. Once we launch, you will be able to edit pages as
well, so you can always go back and add more information yourself or
correct any mistakes. If you want to take a more active role right now
in this, or have any questions, I will be happy to hear from you.
Giorgos
