Often such rights benefit a token few while hurting the ecology for art as a
whole. The recent harmonization of artistÂ’s resale rights, or droit de suite,
in Europe uses a sliding scale that specifies an inalienable and
non-transferable royalty paid by the seller to the artist in the event of a
sale. Some critics of droit de suite argue that it will dramatically increase
auction prices in countries (such as the UK) that adopt it, shifting the art
market away from them. Others argue that even if every country adopted these
rights, it would only guarantee that the rich artists got richer.
