Thanks Paul for raising this. We know now that CCIA has developed a letter to oppose this and they are looking for supporters. To recap, the France is considering adopting an ancillary copyright that would mean that whenever an image is published online, the “indexation rights” on that image are automatically transferred to a collecting society from whom search engines must get a license. This would be negative because it would create new copyright-like rights where none should exist, and the scope of this will impact search engines and even platforms offering Creative Commons licensed images.

C4C, Communia, and others will be signing the letter (see attached). And Creative Commons should put forth its name as a signatory as well—especially since it could directly affect CC licensed content. Let me know by COB Thurs if you have any concerns with us signing this. Otherwise, I will tell them that CC will sign it.
