Dear affiliates,

I sent out a note earlier this month asking for help identifying board members to join our board. I didn't receive any responses, but I've had many one-on-one conversations with you and there were lots of good ideas, so I thought I would ask again.

If you have a name of someone that you think would be a spectacular board member -- please write me with their name, and any links/other info you have that is helpful. We are looking for board members that have fundraising, technical/product, and senior legal experience. I'd appreciate it your ideas very much.

Thank you,
Ryan

Dear affiliates,

I am writing to ask for your help identifying new candidates for the CC board. As you may know, several of our board members (including some founding board members) will end their terms at the end of this year. The exiting board members are:

- Hal Abelson
- Michael Carroll
- Laurie Racine
- Eric Saltzman
- Molly Van Houweling
- Esther Wojcicki

There are a lot of bright talented people on that list, which makes it challenging to let them go. They have all agreed to stay connected as members of the advisory board, and we all believe it is important to have transition to allow new voices onto the board. Fortunately, CC has a relatively large board (15 plus our founder Larry Lessig, who continues to be actively engaged) made up of representatives from various sectors, backgrounds, and regions. We will take some time to celebrate and thank our exiting board members the Summit, and again when their terms end in December, but for now, I am asking for your help brainstorming potential new board members.

The CC Board Governance and Nominations Committee has decided to seek 2-3 new board members to join the board at the end of this year. Together with the board, we have identified three areas where we need new energy and leadership to carry CC forward:

- Fundraising, particularly to help in seeking and securing donors, and engaging corporations in the technology space that share our values. This will be a requirement for all new board candidates.
- Technical leadership, particularly towards a user focus and product approach to technology; and,
- Legal expertise, particularly lawyers working in IP areas in private practice to provide new perspectives not currently represented in our board.

The board noted the importance of considering diversity and regional representation in our search as well, so please consider that as you suggest names.

This is not an exhaustive list of all the skills we need on our board -- these are the skills we have identified to be most urgent and needed for this round of new board members. Each year, we will have the opportunity to add new board members as terms end. I look forward to working with all of you as we seek to renew our board and bring in new ideas.

Right now, I'm looking for help identifying individuals who might consider serving on the CC board. If you have a suggestion for someone who can provide the above skills, please write me directly with their name, and any connection you might have to them (not required, but helpful). If you do have a direct connection, I may follow up to ask you to help me with an introduction.

Thank you,
Ryan
