John,

thanks, this is a great update that gives a good sense of what's going on in CC!

with regard to the themes, "city" theme is strong in general - a good focus of a lot of debates on progressive use of tech; but it does not feel like something that  a lot of affiliates are involved in. themes that come to my mind:
* "the past and the future of sharing" - let's look back 10 years at where we are, and 10 years ahead where we could be
* "Engage!" - the promise of people actively reusing open content is still not fulfilled; let's talk about why that's the case, and how we can change that

Alek

Hello CC Europeans,

as promised here's the first of our updates about the CC staff calls that occur every two weeks. These are notes taken on the spot, so please also take them as such - we haven't done much editing afterwards. But please get in touch if you want to have more information about one of the topics discussed.

1. Discussion about Global Summit
  • Structure of the 3 day event (excluding pre-conferences):
I.showcase day (public)
II.'working together' (internal collaboration)
III."CC global meeting"
  • Discussion: subtracks, calls, theme(s), keynotes ...
  • Affiliate's input wanted re theme(s): What would be the most powerful theme according to you? (now current: 'Sharing city' but perhaps 'city' should be interpreted in a broader way)
  • ... so expect a call in the next week(s).
  • Programme planning: Call for interested Affiliates will be issued soon as well, aiming to have at least 2 Affiliates on planning committee.
2. RCs thinking about better ways to involve Affiliates
  • Some things desparately need more such involvement (for example related to the implementation of the EU CRM Directive)
  • There will be a specialized call on that soon ...
  • More engagement will be a focus in leading up to the Global Summit
3. GPL compatibility process (Sarah, Diane)
  • Process is almost at the end, will be announced shortly
  • It will be a one-way compatibility only
  • Some final issues to iron out whether the attribution removal clause is a further restriction in light of the GPL v3 (...)
4. The List App (Matt, Ryan)
  • ... is here in V 1.0, see app stores!
  • as yet it is a "minimum viable product", i.e. a prototype that doesn't crash
  • Not (yet) something to offer to people not familiar with data-driven apps, but is fun to use
  • We explore usage scenarios
  • Further development is planned
  • Funding for that is hunted for by Ryan and others
  • Affiliates: go try it out, report bugs/ideas to Matt
5. Platform Initiative (Jane)
  • Wrapping up the demo stage with Vimeo, YT and 4 more major platforms
  • To come (maybe): Medium, Eric Steuer is in touch
  • Affiliates: if you're in touch with a platform, relay to Jane
6. School of Open update (Jane)
  • One possible way to go: SoO to be transitioned to Affiliates
  • Talks with CC Kenia underway ...
  • Brainstorming with Mozilla soon ...
  • Interested people are going to be updated in Open Education Call tomorrow.
7. CC Wiki will move / revamp (Matt)
  • There's a lot of "junk", outdated info and broken structures on the current wiki
  • Current wiki will move to a different URL, like wiki.old.creativecommons.org
  • CC staff will select which current content is to move, otherwise the new wiki will be a blank slate
  • To edit, only CCID will be needed in the future (no approval)
  • Question to Affiliates: Do you want/need a wiki editing training?
8. Ryan talks about his upcoming board update
  • f.e. to inform board about finances
  • New routine: One other staff member to present at each board update (this time Jane on platforms)
Next all-staff call in 2 weeks time, Tuesday 12th May, 7 p.m. CEST.

The End
