The Hebrew usage today is to call 'patch' טלאי TLAI, following the NAKOD W-TALU
of Ge. 30:32. It appears to me that the root טלא TL) is a variant of תלה TLH, 'hang, suspend, be over'.

I agree with the association of רקע RQ( and רכך RKK (also RQQ), 'soft'.
