The root שכן $KN, 'rest, settle, linger, spread over, abate' is related to the double consonant roots שח $X (Is. 2:11), then to שחין $XIYN, 'eczema', (Ex. 9:10). Also to שך $K (Ester 2:1). Also to סך SK (Ps. 42:5, Ruth 3:3). Also to SX, and then to סחי SXIY, 'muck, deposit', (Lam. 3:45). It is also related to שקע $Q(, 'sink down, settle down' (Nu 11:2).

It is also related to סכן SKN from which we have סוכן SOKEN (Is. 22:15), סוכנת SOKENET (1Ki 1:2), and מסכן MISKEN (kind of MIDKEN), 'lowly', (Ecc. 4:13).

It is also related to צחן CXN and then to CAXANAH, 'lingering foul odor', (Joel 2:20).

The noun mishkan literally means "dwelling", from the verbal root $KN.
