hi,
barzel is attested in biblical aramaic as parzel. pirzul in hebrew means
iron hoofing, a blacksmith job. i reckon that this, plus plowing, were the
first uses of iron. my etymology for iron is therefore:
parsa (hoof) --> parzel --> barzel
and dont ask me where the final l came from, i just dont know.
clearly it is not the other way, namely, parzel --> parsa, since
parsa is very well explained by "spread". now the question remains,
what is the exact relation between parsa (hoof) and parash/paras (horse).
