Fred,

This sounds more like a textual criticism question than a hebrew-language
study question. Perhaps it is better fitted for the tc-list on yahoo. (Hey
there, Wieland.)

Hello all:

1. Is it true? The greatest achievment, literary and linguistic?

http://lc.bfbs.org.uk/e107_files/downloads/masoretes.pdf

2. Does it preserve and force the interpretation, narrow and specific? With
the loss of spoken language?

3. And who paid for this enormous effort consuming 1,000 years? Who funded
the academies? And their thousands of students and scholars?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talmudic_academies_in_Babylonia

Surely, neither babylon or jerusalem government taxing authorities
favored religious academies then, as they do today.

I welcome your comments.
