Ummmm, is this a typo? 6000 seems like an awful lot...

I doubt it. In the late Middle Ages manuscripts were basically mass produced. So, although these copies were not free of errors, counting them is really of little more significance for textual criticism than is counting the number of copies of a printed edition.
