Maybe because it was common in ancient Greek and Roman writings not to
have spaces between words.
While I have seen a few alphabetic Semitic writings, mostly very
short, that omitted between word markings, most that I have seen have
had some indication separating words: a dot between words (e.g. Siloam
inscription, Mesha stele) or spaces (e.g. DSS).
