Hi Jack,
Thank you for your helpful responses. I had a follow up question. Liz said
that a predicate adjective did not need to agred with the subject in terms of
the definite article. Do not predicate adjectives also generally occur
before the noun they are modifying? Thanks again.

HH: You may be thinking of an attributive adjective. A predicate adjective predicates something about the subject but is in the verbal part of the sentence (here the verb is understood, however).
