Isaiah 49: 3,4, 5 - is referring to himself, not to a future Mashiach.
Shoshanna
HH: Liz does not seem to realize that Isaiah continually compares the
individual servant (not Israel the servant) with Cyrus. There is a lot
in common between the servant and Cyrus because both will be world
rulers, and Isaiah is prophesying them both before they come on the
scene. Cyrus is the near-term prophetic fulfillment, and the servant is
the far-term fulfillment. Cyrus was a king, and this helps us to see
that servant will be a king. Cyrus is called God's anointed, and this
helps to make the comparison closer. Cyrus will save Israel from its
exile and captivity, and in that way he is especially like the servant,
who will do the same for Israel. God even calls Cyrus his servant. But
we know that the Messiah will be an Israelite, and this helps us to see
that the servant is not Cyrus. The servant will be the ruler of Israel
as an Israelite:
Is. 49:3 And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will
be glorified.
Is. 49:4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength
for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my
work with my God.
Is. 49:5 And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his
servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet
shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my
strength.
HH: The Lord makes this comparison between Cyrus and the servant so that
history can catch a glimpse of the servant's future greatness,
