Dear all,

I have made a wiki style translating engine for a modified
version of the Aleppo xml text.

The homepage of the translator is here:

http://www.lamie.org/hebrew/aleppowikitranslator.php

To start translating you need to choose a book e.g.

http://www.lamie.org/hebrew/aleppowikitranslator.php?s=s&b=Gen

>From here you need to choose an open paragraphed section
e.g.

http://www.lamie.org/hebrew/aleppowikitranslator.php?s=f&a=1&z=5

Here you are presented with a table of the words and
combinations contained within the selected section and
their stored translations. The defaults are the original
words/phrases.

A word/phrase can be translated by entering the desired
translation in the corresponding input box in the table
and clicking translate.

Below the table is a side by side view of the original
hebrew and the translation. Each time a new word/phrase
translation is saved the translated view is updated.

The engine is wiki styled and anybody can update the
translations completely anonymously with no need to
register an account or login.

The default translation engine is a level 5 translation
engine which means that 5 word combinations are
translated first, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1.

I hope to add levels 1,2,3,4 and the option to switch
between them so that users can view a more literal or
a more idiomatic translation by merely switching
translation levels. This functionality should be added
within the next few days.

I invite everybody to participate in this experiment
and to invite their students to participate. The
exerices could prove invaluable to students who wish to
learn common words/phrases and get involved in a
community based translation exercise. It could also
prove invaluable to more experienced hebrew linguists
as a consolidatory exercise.

If anybody would like to have their own private password
protected translation engine that can be arranged by
dropping me a private off list email.

Any feature requests for the wiki version will be
greatly welcomed.

If testing of the wiki goes well this project could end
up in a robust open source desktop bible translating
package that participants in this experiment will be
the first to hear about. So please have a go.
