The dagesh in wayyiqtol in the assimilated nun of the past tense marker.

Much simpler. Dagesh is post-tonic, since wa- is a diphthong, and semi-stressed. That secondary stress explains accent shift in wayiqtols, as well.

And the accent shift exaplains the short wayiqtols: final open unaccented vowel dropped.

Post-tonic gemination, dagesh hazak, is attested in Hebrew and many other languages, including Romance and Russian.
