- Subject: [b-hebrew] Ginsburg emendations of YHWH
- Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 15:37:20 -0400
On August 20, James C. Read wrote and asked:
According to Gins.MAS,VolI pp25,26 %115 the following sections of the
torah have 'adonai' in many MSS while 'best' MSS have YHWH.
Gen 18:3,27,30,31,32; 19:18; 20:4;
Exo 4:10,13; 5:22; 15:17; 34:9;
Num 14:7
Does anyone know what MSS/fragments this is based on?
Any opinions about the correct rendition?
Proposed reasons for this inconsistency?

Moshe Shulman briefly responded:
This is not based on any fragments. It is, in fact, a
misunderstanding of what he writes.

Unless I've missed something, a few days have passed and the matter
seems to have died with loose ends.
If Moshe Shulman is correct, would he (or anyone else) please explain
what Ginsburg actually wrote and how we are to understand it.
If, on the other hand, James C. Read's statement and questions are not
based on a misunderstanding of what Ginsburg wrote, are there answers to his
questions?
