Davidson's grammar shows a series of paradigms on the back pages.
It shows examples of hiphil/hophal lamed-he verbs 3ms imperfect:
YaGLeH, YaaGLeH
It shows examples of hiphil/hopjal pe-guttural verbs 3ms imperfect:
Ya(aMiYD, Yaa(aaMaD
It shows examples of hiphil/hophal ayin-waw verbs 3ms imperfect:
YaaQiYM, YuWQaM
The root HaWaH is irregular in all three of these respects. If we are to
reconstruct the 3ms imperfect of HWH in a scholarly way we need to apply
all three rules.
Applying the lamed-he aspect to YHWH we get:
YaHWeH
which is popular in scholoarly circles but shown to be inaccurate.
Applying also the pe-guttural we get:
YaHaWeH
which is trisyllabic but does not agree with the YaHu/YaHo theophoric
components.
Applying also the ayin-waw it is possible that the extra pe-guttural vowel
causes
a change in normal vowelling that would produce something like:
YaHoWeH/YaHuWeH
which is in agreement with both the theophoric components and the
transliteration
IAOUAI
Any thoughts Peter?
I think we're both wasting our time with the I,You,He theory.

As with all other verbs instincts would have guided a first language hebrew
to the correct pronunciation.
This is why the texts never needed a vowel system.

I'm not so sure. Whereas Hebrew as a spoken language of daily intercourse
ended, it remained the language of religion. And YHWH is the most religious
of words. The decline in pronouncing YHWH by some segments of Judaism is
generally traced to 100 BCE - 100 CE, or thereabouts.
"Those who say don't know; those who know don't say." That phrase comes to
mind, though I am sure it was not originally discussing the Tetragram.

The point was that a hebrew up to the 7th century could quite easily have
pronounced the word by merely viewing the consanantal order.
As the language died out no-one with that ability remains.

I do not wish to belabor the point, but many Jews today read unpointed
(voweless) texts with complete comprehension, and this was the case even
before
the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language in Israel.
So, would the average Tsabra instinctively know how to pronounce YHWH
correctly?
