During the reign of Amenhotep III (1386 - 1349) there was a
topographical list prepared in the temple of Amon in Soleb
(Numbia) which named places recorded from a previous king,
Amenhotep II (1453 - 1419). Among the places named is *t3
ssw yhw3* which has been rendered as *Yahweh of the land of
Shasu* (Giveon 1964, 244 or Radford 1992, 272). This would
be 1366 BCE, just a short time before the time when the
Armana letters were written which make many references to
the Hapiru in the same region. Some have argued that the
Shasu are the same or closely related group to the Hapiru.
That the Egyptians might make the name of a foreign deity a
place name should not be surprising.
