Segert's grammar is indeed the most accessible tool for studying Ugaritic.
He provides exercises that begin with simple inscriptions with copious
notes that give you the proper translation and move on to poetic
narratives,which have fewer notes. If you are attempting to study Ugaritic
on your own, Simon Parker (with Mark Smith) Ugaritic Narrative Poetry
provides excellent translations of all the poetic texts included in
Segert's exercises. In lieu of a teacher, you will need to know when
you've translated them correctly :-)
