The Y in Yisrael most certainly pronounced by all speakers of Hebrew. The
reason it dropped from the "English" form, is that Greek does not have a Y
sound, so that in the Greek translation the Yod was replaced by Iota. The
same is true for a lot of other words, e.g. the Xeth in Xawwah, who became
"Eva" or "Eve".
