Trevor, Kim and Ben - thanks for your helpful comments - even when there are
dissagreements I learn. A point I would like to raise though:

It is notable that verse 5 asks a question which in my understanding points
BACK to verse 4. So surely we are told of something in verse 4 that lead to
that question. The Israelites (for those 40 years) in general treated God
quite badly; as a result of this behaviour it became a 'stain' on their
generation/souls;(Their offspring would inherit the land plus the fact that
a mixed multitude also departed from Egypt with the sons of Abraham) Could
this 'context' be used to suggest an understanding of the translation:
"Ruin is brought to Him by those that are not His children, this is the
blemish that lay upon the whole congregation, they are a perverse etc...

I'm only probing!!!!!! Chris.
