Izzy, I hate to analyse a joke, but actually your point about church
alignment is not true, but a common misconception. Random House had it
correct. "Western" churches are generally aligned to the east, whether
Jerusalem is east (as in southern Europe and America), south (as in
eastern Europe, where some churches are "western"), north (as in Africa)
or west (as here in Australia).
