Shalom Raymond!

Pope's commentary (or, should I say, encyclopedia...) is a good starting
point for anything on SoS. I'll have another look at it, but as far as I
remember, he goes by the classic modern view of the history of exegesis,
which sounds like: All the over-pious ancients got it all wrong because
they couldn't stand
the idea of sex in the Bible, but since Herder we know the truth. Some
scholars have gotten past that when it comes to certain 12-13 cent. Jewish
exegetes, but I haven't seen too much on the Christians (except Origen).
Today I took out Engammare's _La Cantique des Cantiques a la Renaissance_.
He seems to have some material, but I'm afraid it will take me a while to
get past his French...

Thanks
Baruch
