My guess is, the "in faithfulness" (or whichever way we prefer to render
'emunah) refers further back than to the preceding word -- that is, _brwkym
... ywd(yw b)mwnh_ is approximately "may those who know him be faithfully
blessed" (cf. the similar constructions of "blessed be x in y" in l. 2-3 and
elsewhere). I.e. the 'emunah more likely characterizes God (or the berakah
itself?) than the person who knows. That should leave Martin Luther out of
it.
That aside, I would have thought it was quite uncontroversial to point out
that John has a lot in common with the DSS, as long as you don't go on to
make crackpot claims about Jesus being born at Qumran and whatnot. John and
DSS authors share ideas and terminology because of being jews living in the
same age and possibly even same part of the world.
just my two cents - it's sunday morning this side of the pond and as usual I
forgot to put back the clock for end-of-daylight-saving-time, so my life
feels an hour longer. Barukh ha-Shem yotzer 'or ...
