Friends--

In 1902 courses in Biblical Hebrew were added to the curriculum of Wake
Forest University, and as far as any of us can tell, it has been taught
continuously since.

To mark the 100th year of Hebrew here, we are hosting a small symposium
on October 10th. All presentations are open to the public.

Hebrew Centennial Celebration

2:00pm Dr. Deeana Klepper, Boston University
"Locating the Truth: The History of Christian Hebraism within the
framework of Christian-Jewish Encounter"

Professor Klepper's research focuses on medieval Christian
attitudes towards Jews and Jewish tradition. She has published articles
on
the medieval Christian study of Hebrew and use of Jewish tradition,
currently finishing a book entitled From Exegesis to Polemic: Nicholas
of Lyra's Use of Jewish Text.

Dr. Tod Linafelt, Georgetown University
„The Wizard of Uz, or, Why knowing a little Hebrew can make you
even more postmodern”

Professor Linafelt is an Associate Professor of Theology in the
Department of Theology of Georgetown University. He is a prolific
author,
Having edited Strange Fire: Reading the Bible After the Holocaust (NY,
2000),
And having authored Surviving Lamentations: Catastrophe, Lament and
Protest in the Afterlife of a Biblical Book (Chicago, 2000).

Dr. Charles David Isbell, Louisiana State University
"The Hebrew Teacher: Guru, Drill Instructor, or Role Model?”

Dr. Isbell is Instructor in Hebrew in the Dept. of Religious Studies at
Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Since 1967 he has taught
Hebrew to students from age seven to seventy-seven. He is most recently
the author of Introduction to Biblical Hebrew (Warren Center, PA, 2002).

Dr. Michael Patrick O’Connor, Catholic University of America
“Heavy of Mouth and Heavy of Tongue”: The Academic Study of
Biblical Hebrew

Professor O’Connor is chair of the Department of Semitic and Egyptian
Languages and Literature at the Catholic University of America. He is
the author of Hebrew Verse Structure (Winona Lake, IN, 1980, rpt. with
supplement, 1997). He edited with B. Waltke the highly respected
Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax (Winona Lake, IN, 1990).
