It's the hyena bat, a large, ugly relative of the fox bat.

Seriously, it occurs 8 times: Lev 11:16; Deut 14:15; Isa 13:21; 34:13;
43:20; Jer 50:39; Mic 1:8; Job 30:29. Most of the current lexicons I
looked at say it could be some kind of owl, an "eagle-owl." It lives in
ruins (Jer 50:39) and makes a mournful sound (Mic 1:8).

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do,
do everything for God's glory. (1 Cor 10:31, HCSB)

My son has started reading the bible
(miracle of miracles) and told me that
ostriches were not kosher. Sure enough
according to the English translation of Lev. 11:16
they are not. But I was served ostrich in Israel and
was told it was kosher. So, was I Iied to in Israel
(that restaurant also served escargot and other
strange things)? or had the rabbis decided that
the animal which we translate as "ostrich" is not the
ostrich afterall? It is bat haya(anah in Hebrew. According
to the BDB, this is the only occurrence.
