Ray,
I'm a little skeptical as to Bandstra's conclusions. There are numerous times
when I have
encountered KiY in which the best translation offered was with the emphatic
(eg, "indeed" or
"certainly" or "of course"). This is not to deny the subordinate
relationship, for that is I
believe integral to the meaning of the particle. The emphatic usage does
imply a subordination to a
previous clause.
Furthermore, there have been times when I have seen examples of KiY that were
best translated as
'when' or 'if'' There are not many of these, but I have come across them. If
memory serves me
correctly, Psa 23:4 would be one of these cases.
