dear friends,
i had a friend ask about the writing of history in the absence of concrete
historical knowledge (how it really was): this was in reference to chains of
transmission, and no doubt would be related to religious traditions
generally: whether zen buddhist masters or rabbis or whatever. he wanted
to know about the agenda of these writers, and how both ideology and
creativity combine to generate such "histories".
i thought the topic overlaps with hebrew bible too ;-) has anyone seen
anything recent along these lines...? i guess, especially in terms of
medieval jewish studies.....
cheers
