How about some English examples. We usually read Shakespeare (16th-17th
century) in the original, though it is difficult, with the help of notes.
But Chaucer (14th century) is so difficult that non-specialists commonly
read modern language versions.

Excuse me, I was at pains finding the proper example. My bilingual edition
of
Dante is in the original language too. However you may perhaps find a better
example.
