Excuse me but the verse clearly needs a verb so isn't "to wrestle" (Heb:
Shin-Resh-Hey) better than a verb form derived from the noun "Sar" or
Prince--where else in Tanakh does this noun become a verb

Hence: And he said "not Yaakov will be called your name but Yisrael for you
have wrestled with gods (Elohim--THis could be a plural of respect but see
on) and with men and prevailed...And Yaakov called the name of the place
Paniel (but note varient: Panuel) for I have seen gods (elohim again) face to
face and my soul has been saved." So, the writer thinks that the personage
encountered by Yaaqov is a deity. And since Yaakov had wrestled with the
personage (although a different verb is used), that is where the name comes
from, Note the other account at 34:10 is even less helpful as to origins.
