Against the impression provided by the Old Testament traditions that the high El 
disappeared or became inert in Israelite religion, this 8th century text from Kuntillet 
Ajrud demonstrates that El was indeed actively revered until the destruction of his 
namesake people in the last quarter of the same century (721 BCE).   Selective 
editing is exposed by this line.

wbzrh 'l ... wymsn hrm ... /lbrk b`l bym mlh[mh] /lsm 'l bym mlh[mth]

When El shone forth {...}with the mountains melting to bless Baal in the day of 
batt[le],(Baal fought) to honor El in the day of batt[le].
