Dear Peter,
You should look at the following. Rofe is of the view that the 4QSam a plus
is secondary, and of the nature of a midrash.
A. Rofe, "The Acts of Nahash according to 4QSam(a)," Israel Exploration
Journal 32 (1982), pp. 129-33
-------
Other recent literature which may or may not be relevant which I have found
but not read: Rofe, Alexander: "4QMidrash Samuel? Observations concerning
the character of 4QSam(a)," Textus 19 (1998) 63-74.
Kallai, Zecharia: "Samuel in Qumran; expansion of a historiographical
pattern (4QSam(a))", Revue Biblique 103,4 (1996) 581-591.
Venturini, Simone: "1 Sam 10,27-11,1 - testo masoretico e 4QSam(a); le
posizioni di alcuni autori e un tentativo di soluzione" Rivista Biblica
44,4 (1996) 397-425
Grottanelli, Cristiano: "The enemy king is a monster; a biblical equation,"
*Kings & Prophets*, New York 1999, pp. 47-72
