does anyone know of an explanation for the variation in simple vs
composite schwa with initial-guttural verbs? GKC just describes it, and
offers the distinction between firmly vs loosely closed: but since it's
the same syllables with the same gutturals, this is hardly an explanation.
and yet, the variation does not appear to be totally random....
