I recommend the following books.
McFall, Leslie, 1982, "The Enigma of the Hebrew Verbal System", Sheffield:
The Almond Press - A very fine account of the different ideas regarding
WAYIQTOL from the tenth century to the present, doubts that WAYYIQTOL is a
conjugation, but presents no new theory.
Michel, Diethelm, 1960, "Tempora und Satzstellung in den Psalmen". Ph.D.
Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, Bonn - Discussing the Psalms
without viewing WAYYIQTOL as a special conjugation. Discusses a new Theory.
Kustar, Peter, 1972, "Aspekt im Hebräischen". Ph.D Universität Basel.
Brings the Slavic aspect system into the discussion. Discusses a new theory.
All three are critical to the traditional view and brake new land, but
their models are not similar to mine (I therefore refer to a book of myself
where I use 39 pages to present a popular sketch of the Hebrew ( and Greek)
verbal systems. You will find it at www.elihubooks.com.
You should also read a fine book that defends the traditional view:
Gross, Walter, 1976, "Verbform und Funktion wayyiqtol für die Gegenwart?"
St Otilien.
In addition you should look through "Zeitschrift für Althebraistik" and
particularly look for articles by Hans-Peter Müller.

Rolf
