Qere were frequently used to "clean up" language. It is related
etymologically to the Arabic word for "tumor, boil of the anus or vulva". It
was considered one of the more delicate eupheisims by Sopherim. Best source
on this C.D. Ginsburg's _Introduction to the the Massoretico-Critical
Edition of the Hebrew Bible_published by KTAV Press page 346.
