During the past day, I was accused on list of using ad hominem attacks
as a substitute for scholarly discussion. Lest there be any
misunderstanding, the post was not an entering into the discussion.
Rather, it was an attempt to correct what was an apparent
misinterpretation on the part of the originator of the thread when he
stated, "When nobody seemed to have an answer to these questions, at
least they did not deem it fit to send an answer, I made some comments
myself." I thought at the time, and still think, that a major cause of
the silence was because of the previously stated purposes of the
originator for opening such discussions, the way such discussions have
evolved in the past, and the expectation that no real insights into the
language were likely to emerge from this discussion. I did try (and
apparently failed) to show that I respect the person as a scholar, while
admitting that I questioned some of his techniques. I have written him
offlist, trying to explain in further detail my purposes for the post
and the points that I attempted to make. I do feel, however, that the
accusation that he has made onlist is entirely wrong, with the exception
of the statement that I have come to find these type discussions to be a
waste of time. As long as he does not publicly misinterpret the silence
again, I plan to return to it.
Just had to get this off my chest,
Paul
