By the way, speaking of convoluted, 2 Kings 1:6 has four embedded
levels of quoting (five if you count the outermost narrative "And they
said to him" separately). This was one of the guinea-pig verses in
chap 3 of my dissertation (though because of accentual complexity, not
quotational complexity).
And they said to him,
"A man came up to us, and he said to us,
`Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him,
"Thus says the LORD:
`Is there no God in Israel that you must send to
inquire of Baal-Zebub the God of Ekron? Therefore
the bed which you went up into, you shall not come
down out of it, but shall surely die.' " ' "
Can anyone think of a verse with even more embedded levels?
