dear henry,
was thinking of you this weekend while visiting <gulp> my inlaws. my
mother-in-law teaches english as a second language, and we often talk
about english phonetics, and the mysteries of transcription systems.
interesting: she has a clear contrast of three low vowels in the words
"cat" "cot" and "caught": front, central and back respectively. all
three are phonemic. she's from northern indiana. "caught" is not round
for her.
cheers
V
