"Sojourner" may be good for your interlinear because almost no-one
knows at all accurately what it means, and where its original English
meaning does not fit with Hebrew "ger". On the other hand, if you
expect "the user... to have to look up the Hebrew dictionary to
understand the meaning", then what's the point of doing the
interlinear?
Meanwhile, if NIV is going to replace modern English words by obsolete
ones used only by KJV and those who read it, then they will find
themselves losing at least one reader, myself. Bruce Waltke may be a
fine Hebrew scholar, but please let decisions like this be made by
good English stylists.

Gday all,
Thanks for your your input on ger. Just to clarify, the interlinear is not
one-word-per-stem or computer generated, so we will use a range of words
whenever necessary, but we like to try to find the word that covers the
largest single block of the total semantic domain of each term. So ger will
obviously have a few different translations in the interlinear, it is trying
to find the base English word that will serve in the majority of cases that
is difficult.
I spoke to Bruce Waltke today about the work htey are doing on the NIV and
he said they haven't tackled this particular problem yet, only that they
have decided to drop "alien" due to E.T. etc. He personally likes
"sojourner" as several others on this list have suggested. The problem is of
course that for many people this word is fairly opaque. Which may also make
it useful since the user will tend to have to look up the Hebrew dictionary
to understand the meaning.
With regards,
Matthew Anstey
